Space Planning Guide

Space planning is fundamental to creating rooms that work well. Define the function of each room or area and the key elements required. Plan the space so each element is included and its position, and understand specific needs or requirements.

The Basics

  • Identify what will be done in the room by whom, is there a specific function or requirement - often this can be more than one

  • Create a requirement list

  • Consider how you will move around the space – movement pathways

  • Take measurements of the room and any key elements, create a plan

  • Position larger items first

  • Consider what light is required to complete the task and the impact of natural light

The 6 Key Elements

Lighting

Flexible lighting allows for a change in mood. Direct light is uncomfortable unless needed for a specific task.

Smell

Smell can often evoke memories both good and bad. Its influence is greater than we think, there is nothing more powerful than a breath of fresh air.

Colour & Pattern

Colour is one of our most powerful cost-effective tools, it can transform how we feel in the rooms we live in and our behaviour.

Furniture & Finish

Ergonomic shapes remind us of nature, so are inherently more visually relaxing. The choice of material can also heighten or soften the sensory experience.

Sound

Sound is like a ping pong ball… it will bounce around a box until it hits a soft surface to absorb the motion.

Finding Our Way

In situations where we already feel stress, signs and directions which are unclear can create unnecessary anxiety.
